2016-17 Mid Season Recap

The first semester of the tenth season of Bulldog hockey has already been completed as of December 11th. Let’s see how our six teams have fared since October.

Men’s Varsity

The Men’s Varsity team suffered a loss in their first game of the season against the MSOE Raiders but bounced back to defeat the Raiders 6-0 the next day. The Bulldogs took down foe Wisconsin Stevens Point at home Thanksgiving weekend and tied them this past weekend in Wisconsin. The Bulldogs posted a 8-2-2 record so far this season and have scored 59 goals in the 12 game span.

Players Making an Impact

Vinny Paquette: Freshman Vinny Paquette is tied for the team lead in goals and second in points in his freshman season. Paquette scored for the first time as a Bulldog on November 11th versus Marian and would tally at least one goal in the next five games to take second place on the team in points.

Vinny Post: Post missed the first seven games of the season due to injury and did not play ubtil November 27th against St. Thomas. Post scored his first as a Bulldog that game and has scored in every game but one since, putting him at 5 goals and 4 assists for 9 points in 5 games, seventh overall on the team in points and tied for third in goals.

Women’s Varsity

The reigning Women's NCHA Playoff and Regular Season Champions got off to their best start in program history this season, starting off with a 6-0 record before dropping a game to #1 Plattsburgh. The Bulldogs, however, have kept a perfect 8-0 record in league play, remaining undefeated against NCHA opponents. The Bulldogs are averaging 5 goals a game, scoring 50 goals in their first 10 games this season.

Senior Kristin Lewicki broke former teammate Kelsey Kusch’s point record this semester, tallying her 123rd career point to become the all time leading point getter and goal scorer in Adrian College Women’s Hockey history.

Players Making an Impact

Kaylyn Schroka, Sarah Shureb and Kristin Lewicki: The all senior line is tearing up the NCHA this season, with all three taking the top 3 scoring spots on the team and Lewicki and Schroka taking the top two spots for points in the nation. Combined, the three seniors have tallied 29 goals and 45 assists for 74 points, averaging 7.4 points per game.

Men’s ACHA D1

The Men’s ACHA D1 team is off to a red hot start this season, going 18-1 through the first semester, downing top ranked opponents such as #3 Stonybrook for their first homestand of the season and Davenport twice at home. The Bulldogs impressive start to the season earned them the #2 ranking in the ACHA D1 rankings for the past two weeks heading into break.

Junior forward Brad Kobryn broke two records so far this season, breaking former forward Spencer Bonomo’s goal record of 100 and former NCAA standout Shawn Skelly’s goal record of 103 to become the top goal scorer in Adrian College Hockey history. You can read more about it here.

Players Making an Impact

Marcus Rose: Although this year’s freshman class is full of excellent players, Marcus Rose is making one of the biggest impacts on the team this year. Topping veteran Brad Kobryn in points through the first semester, Rose has been unstoppable, averaging 1.058 goals per game through the first 18 games he has played.

Mike Barrett: The freshman goaltender is having a phenomenal rookie campaign as he shares the net with senior Matt Schnoes. Barrett has put up a 10-0 record, including 3 shutouts, one of which was against the #3 team in the country, and played 602;47 so far this season while maintaining a 1.39 goals against average and an astounding .953 save percentage, which is the best in the country.

Brad Kobryn: It’s hard to make a list of impactful players and not include the junior forward. Kobryn not only leads the team in goals this season with 20, but has outscored every single player to ever play for Adrian College. Kobryn’s slick moves and knack for scoring have earned him a place in the Adrian Hockey record books as the top goal scorer for any program and is only 34 points away from the Adrian ACHA scoring record and 67 points from the all time points record.

WACHA

The girls of WACHA are on a roll this season, sweeping five straight opponents including the #1 ranked and reigning National Champions the Miami Redhawks. They earned their first #1 weekly ranking after the sweep of Miami and fell back down to #2 after being swept by Liberty University the next weekend. WACHA ends the semester with a 12-1-0-1 record, scoring 50 goals in 14 games. Through the season, WACHA is doing a goal-a-thon for the Wounded Warrior Project and is still taking pledges for donations for each goal scored this season. You can make your pledge here.

Players Making an Impact

Britt Levassuer: Levasseur is on fire this semester. After scoring her first goal of the season and as a Bulldog against Michigan, Levasseur has been unstoppable, tallying a team leading 10 goals and 5 assists in her 14 games played.

Jessica Fabbro: Senior Jess Fabbro made a transition to forward this season after playing on the point. Fabbro has made an immediate impact playing with Nicole Paradis and Kaillie Hardy on the Bulldogs’ top line.

ACHA D3 Gold

The Men’s ACHA D3 Gold team is off to an 11-4 start to their 8th season of hockey. Highlighted by their victories over the reigning national champions, the Oakland Grizzlies, and old foe Hope College, the Bulldogs and their eight freshmen are off to a great start. The Bulldogs have scored 78 goals and tallied over 10 goals twice and five or more in six different contests.

Players Making an Impact

Joe Laskero: Freshman forward Joe Laskero has made an immediate impact on the Gold Squad, coming in second in points and goals and first in assists through the first semester with the Bulldogs.

Mario Tomei: Senior Mario Tomei is one of few veterans on the Gold Squad this season, making his leadership and steady defensive play invaluable to a young Gold team with 8 freshman and 7 newcomers to the Gold team.

ACHA D3 Black

The Black Squad is off to a 6-7-0-1 start to the season, beginning the semester with an overtime loss to Indiana Tech and ending it with a 3-0 win over University of Toledo. Historicall a very young team, the Black Squad only has 6 freshmen on their roster this season, giving them a strong core of veteran players to lead them this season for the first time in a quite a few years.

Players Making an Impact

Rick Mischak: Freshman Rick Mischak brings not only a sold prescence on the point, but age and experience as well, coming to the Bulldogs at the age of 20 after playing junior hockey in the USPHL Midwest, NAPHL and MWJHL.

Gerin Hohl: Hohl comes to the Black Squad from the D3 Gold team where he was a steady presence in the lineup. Hohl brings to the table sweet and silky stickhandling abilities and a knack for fighting as well.

Through the first semester of play, the Bulldogs are 35-7-1 at Arrington Ice Arena so far this season and the best is yet to come with the possibility of hosting both the men’s and women’s NCHA playoffs and possibly even an NCAA quarterfinal game this next semester.
