WD2 Opens Season with Sweep of Lake Superior State

The Women's ACHA Div. II team took to the ice for the first time this season on home ice Saturday and Sunday at Arrington Ice Arena.


Jordan Giove would kick things off for the Bulldogs in the first two minutes of the game, scoring her first as a Bulldog. Katie Hayward would add the lone assist. Ally Van Antwerp would make it 2-0 ten minutes later with assists from Giove and Kenzi Heisner. Olive Stevens would give the Bulldogs a comfortable 3-0 lead before the end of the first. The Lakers would cut the lead to 3-1 before the end of the first but the Bulldogs would hold onto that lead through the first twenty minutes of play.


Britt Levasseur would tally her first goal for the D2 team midway through the first period with an assist from Heisner. Jasmine Riebel would pick up her first goal as a Bulldog with an assist from fellow freshman Giove. The Bulldogs would take a 5-1 lead into the third and final period of play.


Giove would add her second of the game less than two minutes into the third period with an assist from Hannah Roegner. Heisner would add a goal of her own five minutes into the third with an assist from Levasseur. Hayward would also add a goal of her own with less than five minutes remaining in the third with an assist from Zoie Zelmanski. Levasseur would add her second of the game for the final Bulldog goal of the night with an assist from Giove.


Final score Saturday night would be 9-1 in favor of the Bulldogs with Victoria Poland picking up the win in net.


The two teams would face each other once again on Sunday afternoon at Arrington Ice Arena.


Sami Lhotak would score her first of the season for a 1-0 lead early in the first frame. Hannah Chase and Jasmine Riebel would assist. Lake Superior would tie things up midway through the first period. Hannah Roegner would snag a shorthanded goal with two minutes left in the first to give the Bulldogs the lead once again. Ally Van Antwerp and Katie Hayward would assist.


Kathleen Droba would tally her first of the year in the second period to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. Britt Levasseur and Sara Knapp would assist. Giove would grab her third of the weekend with 1:41 remaining in the period for a more comfortable 4-1 lead off of an unassisted effort on the penalty kill.


Kenzi Heisner would tally her second of the weekend :59 into the third period with assists from Levasseur and Droba. Giove would add a pair of goals to grab her first hat trick as a Bulldog in her second game played. Roegner and Hayward would assist on the first while the second would come unassisted.


Final score Sunday afternoon would be 7-1 in favor of the Bulldogs with Victoria Poland once again picking up the win between the pipes.


The WD2 team takes the ice at home once again on February 5th when they face Notre Dame at 9:30 pm.
