Men's Varsity Scores 21 on Trine, Wins Regular Season Title
The Men's NCAA team took on the Trine University for their final NCHA matchup of the regular season in a home at home series.
The two teams first took the ice on the road in Angola, Indiana. Trine would strike first but a pair of goals, one coming from Mathew Rehding and a powerplay goal from Connor May, would come in the last five minutes of the period to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 edge going into the second period. Andrew Bellant would grab the lone assist on Rehding's goal. Zach Goberis and Jacob Breckles would assist.
The Bulldogs would explode in the second period, scoring six goals in twenty minutes. Sam Ruffin would grab the first of the period for a 4-1 Bulldog lead. Matt Eller and Rehding would assist at the 5:48 mark. Rex Moe would make things 5-1 five minutes later with the lone assist going to Dawson Ellis. Ryan Butler would add to the onslaught less than a minute and a half after Moe with assists going to Terry Ryder and Chase Spencer. Moe's second of the game would come at the 12:51 mark on the powerplay with Alessio Luciani and Jaden Shields picking up assists. Ellis would net a goal of his own at the 15:04 mark with May assisting. Rehding's second of the night would close out the scoring in the second, as he netted a powerplay goal with only four seconds remaining in the period. Ellis and Ryder would assist.
Goberis would snag a goal of his own 7:10 into the third period. Butler and John Kaljian would assist. Trine would answer back 18 seconds later to make things 9-1. Nick Lund's shorthanded goal would be the tenth of the game with the lone assist going to Matt Eller.
Trine would net the last goal of the game but the Bulldogs would have the last word as they skated away with a 10-3 victory. Cam Gray would pick up the win between the pipes.
Saturday evening would be game two of the matchup and senior night for the Bulldogs. A win in any fashion would give them a Peters Cup Conference Championship for the second year in a row and the 12th overall dating back to the pre-Peters Cup days of the MCHA.
Sam Ruffin would once again kick things off for the Bulldogs, this time scoring only twenty seconds into the first period. Mathew Rehding and Matt Eller would assist. Rex Moe would add his third of the weekend at the 13:49 mark with assists from Alessio Luciani and Jaden Shields. Andrew Bellant would pick up a powerplay goal with only 45 seances left in the period for a 3-0 lead going into the second period. Ruffin and Shields would assist on Bellant's powerplay goal.
Ryan Butler wasted even less time scoring in the second period, snagging the fourth goal of the game on the powerplay and only twelve seconds into the frame. Trevor Coykendall and Joshua Owings would assist. Coykendall would add another powerplay goal 19 seconds later with assists to Butler and Owings. Shields would add the third powerplay goal of the period at the 3:56 mark of the second with assists to Moe and Luciani. Nick Lund's second of the weekend would round things out in a productive second period at the 7:11 mark of the second. Zach Goberis would pick up the lone assist. Score after two periods would be 7-0 Bulldogs.
Ruffin would net his second of the game 2:48 into the third period with Luciani picking up the lone assist. The Thunder would score at the 4:27 mark. Bellant's second of the game would answer back two minutes later with the assist going to Owings. Coykendall's second of the game would come at the 13:51 mark for a 10-1 lead. Luciani would assist. Butler's second of the game would round things out and give the Bulldogs a ten goal lead with less than three minutes remaining in the game. Kaljian and Goberis would assist.
Final score Saturday night would be 11-1 as the Bulldogs silenced the Thunder for the fourth time this season. Nic Tallarico would pick up the win in net as the Bulldogs claimed their twelfth regular season conference title.
The Bulldogs square off against Trine this Tuesday in the first round of the Harris Cup Playoffs.
