MD1 Tramples Trine in Season Opener
The MD1 team took on the Trine University Thunder in a home at home series to open the 2022-23 season this past week.
Freshman Dylan Gajewski's first goal as a Bulldog would get things started in Angola, Indiana in a rare Wednesday night matchup. Sam Spaedt and Sebastian Smith would assist. The Thunder would tie things up a minute later. Matt Dicesare would give the Dawgs the lead once again at the 7:18 mark of the first period off of a powerplay goal. Connor Smith and Dakota Bohn would assist.
Connor Smith would make things 3-1 with 7:28 gone in the second period off of a powerplay goal with an assist from Tyler Fyfe. Freshman Justin Jamer would net his first Bulldog goal seven minutes later with an assist from Connor Smith. After two, the Bulldogs would lead 4-1.
Brodie Thornton would score the Bulldogs' third powerplay goal of the night at the 9:59 mark of the third period. Dakota Bohn and Brayden Morris would assist. Connor Smith would send home his second of the game less than two minutes later with assists from Matteo DiGiulio and Matt Dicesare.
Final score Wednesday night in Angola would be 6-1 in favor of the Bulldogs with Noah Decottignies picking up the win in net.
The Dawgs would take on the Thunder once again on Thursday night at Arrington Ice Arena for their home opener.
Connor Smith would open the scoring at the 5:34 mark of the first period. Brodie Thornton and Matteo DiGiulio would assist. Sam Spaedt would pick up his first of the season shorthanded at the 11:25 mark of the first. Henrik Overvall would grab the lone assist. Matteo DiGiulio would close out the scoring in the first with only eleven seconds left on the clock with a powerplay goal. Brenden Stanko would pick up the lone assist.
Connor Smith would net his second of the night at the 2:09 mark of the second frame off of an unassisted effort. Dylan Kent would pick up his first of the year with a shot from the point to make things 5-0 with 5:55 gone in the second. DiGiulio would grab the only assist on Kent's goal. Spaedt's second of the night would come on the man advantage at the 7:40 mark with assists from Sebastian Smith and Sheldon Nolan. Stanko would pick up his first of the year five minutes later on an unassisted effort. Alec Lindecker would make things 8-0 at the 14:19 mark of the second with an assist from Tyler Fyfe. Dylan Gajewski would pick up his first of two back to back goals with only forty seconds left in the second period. Dakota Bohn would assist.
Gajewski's second goal would come less than thirty seconds into the third period with assists from Spaedt and Sebastian Smith. The Thunder would net their first and only goal of the game on the powerplay at the 1:56 mark. Spaedt would complete the hat trick and close out the scoring for both teams at the 10:57 mark of the final frame. Spaedt's third goal would be unassisted.
Final score at Arrington Ice Arena would be 11-1 in favor of the Dawgs with Harrison Fleming picking up the win between the pipes.
The Bulldogs are back at home this upcoming weekend in a two game series against Roosevelt. Puck drops at 7pm on Friday night and 1pm on Saturday afternoon.
