MD1 Sweeps Soo Eagles in Exhibition Series




For the first time in 225 days, the MD1 team took to the ice in a pair of exhibition games against the Soo Eagles of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.


The first frame went by scoreless for both teams. Sophomore Connor Smith would break the ice for the first goal of the season midway through the second period with assists from senior Mike Finger and junior Brenden Stanko. Fellow sophomore Sam Spaedt would make things 2-0 before the end of the second with the lone assist going to freshman Matteo DiGiulio.


The third period would be as scoreless as the first and the final tally would b 2-0 in favor of the Bulldogs Friday night with senior Andrew Wagner picking up the shutout.


The Dawgs would get things going a little earlier on Saturday afternoon, going up 1-0 with under a minute to go in the first period off of a powerplay goal from senior Chris Donaldson.


Mike Finger would snag a shorthanded goal in the second to go up 2-0. Junior Manny Silverio and Connor Smith would assist. The Eagles would score their first goal of the weekend on the powerplay to cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1.


Senior Jordan Oshowy would send home a beauty from the point with less than two minutes gone in the third period. Matteo DiGiulio and Smith would assist. Oshowy would bury an empty netter from 3/4 way down the ice with 1:47 to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead. The Eagles would score once more and pull their goalie once again before junior Tyler Fyfe put the game away with an empty net goal to end the game. Freshman Brodie Thornton would be awarded the lone assist.


Mike Barrett would pick up the win on Saturday night for the Dawgs, turning away 29 of the 31 shots he faced.


The Bulldogs square off against their first ACHA opponent on Thursday night at Arrington Ice Arena when they take on the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech.
