MD1 Sweeps Rival Wolverines in First Top 10 Series
The MD1 team took on familiar foe the University of Michigan Dearborn Wolverines this past weekend in a home at home series.
The two teams first squared off at Arrington Ice Arena, their first matchup since December of 2019 after the Wolverines pulled out of the 2020-21 season last year.
The Wolverines would take the first advantage in the first period. Matteo DiGiulio would tie things up 5:07 into the second frame on the powerplay with assists from Tyler Fyfe and Brenden Stanko.
Nash Hatcher would give the Dawgs their first lead of the night, grabbing an absolutely greasy shorthanded goal after picking the Wolverine goaltender's pocket behind the net and sending the puck into a nearly empty net. Henrik Overvall would assist. The Wolverines would make it a tie game :35 later with a powerplay goal of their own.
The two teams would go by scoreless through the rest of the third period as well as all 5:00 of 3v3 overtime before heading to a shootout.
The Wolverines would send one by Noah Decottignies in the first round but Sam Spaedt would score on the other end. Decottignies would stonewall the second Wolverine shooter and Brenden Stanko would also score to give the Dawgs the advantage. Decottignies would stand tall in the third and final shot to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 victory in front of a packed house at Arrington Ice Arena.
The Dawgs would take to the road the following night to travel to the University of Michigan-Dearborn for their first road tilt of the year.
Chris Donaldson would start things for the Dawgs at the 6:37 mark of the first period. Sam Spaedt would grab the lone assist. Tyler Fyfe would add to the lead with a powerplay goal with less than two minutes left in the first with assists from Sheldon Nolan and Donaldson.
Matteo DiGiulio would add another powerplay goal in the dying seconds of the second frame while on the 4on3. powerplay in a penalty ridden end of the second. Spaedt and Fyfe would assist.
Spaedt would snag a goal of his own, seconds after being hit without the puck, to put the Dawgs up 4-0 with 4:13 gone in the third.
Final score would be 4-0 in favor of the visiting Dawgs and Harrison Fleming would record his second straight shutout between the pipes, making it three years since the Bulldogs allowed a goal against while on the road against the Wolverines.
The Dawgs take on the Stony Brook Sea Wolves this Friday and Saturday at Arrington Ice Arena at 7:00 and 1:00 pm.
