Astalos Picks Up 200th Win in MD1 Sweep of Purdue Northwest
The MD1 team took on the Purdue Northwest Pride this past weekend to round out their first semester slate of games with a home at home series.
The two teams first took to the ice Thursday night for one last home game for the MD1 team in 2022 at Arrington Ice Arena.
Connor Smith would open the scoring with 4:11 gone in the first period, finishing off a beautiful play on the rush from Sam Spaedt, who would be awarded the lone assist. Tyler Fyfe's eleventh of the year would come on the powerplay halfway through the period to give the Dawgs a two goal lead. Dakota Bohn and Spaedt would assist. Matt Dicesare would add another powerplay goal in the final three minutes of play in the first with assists from Fyfe and Bohn. Spaedt would notch his fifteenth of the year in the final minute and a half of play for a 4-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Connor Smith and Sebastian Smith would assist on Spaedt's tally.
Captain Sheldon Nolan would grab his first on home ice of the season on the powerplay with nine and a half minutes gone in the middle frame. Spaedt and Sebastian Smith would assist. Connor Smith would pick up his second of the game shortly after with the lone assist going to Spaedt. Matt Cruz would net his first of the year off of a rush, going bar down for a commanding 7-0 lead in the second period. Henrik Overvall and Fyfe would assist. Connor Smith would complete his second hat trick of the season at the 16:15 mark, grabbing assists from brother Sebastian Smith and Spaedt.
Connor Smith would make it a four goal night only fifteen seconds into the third period off of an unassisted effort. The Pride would get on the board forty seconds later but the Dawgs would hold the 9-1 lead. Justin Jamer would round out the scoring on a shorthanded goal, the eighth of the season for the freshman wearing the number eight, coming at the 17:52 mark of the final frame.
Final score Thursday night would be 10-1 in favor of your Dawgs with Noah Decottignies picking up the win between the pipes.
The same two teams would face-off Friday night, this time in Hammond, Indiana for the final game of 2022.
Connor Smith's league leading 22nd goal of the season would give the Dawgs the lead late in the first period on the man advantage. Brenden Stanko would grab the lone assist. Justin Jamer's second of the weekend would come on the advantage as well, giving the visiting Dawgs a 2-0 lead only 0:59 into the middle frame. Tyler Fyfe and Dakota Bohn would assist. The Pride would score back to back goals in a 1:40 span to tie things in the middle frame before Matteo DiGiulio would break the ice with a powerplay tally. DiGiulio's seventeenth of the season would be assisted by Nash Hatcher. The Pride would strike back twenty seconds later to tie things at three a piece. Sam Spaedt would be the hero, netting his sixteenth of the year on the powerplay from Nathaniel Mott and Sheldon Nolan to give the Dawgs the lead and the eventual game winning goal.
Both teams would hold each other scoreless through the final twenty minutes and the Dawgs, backstopped by Noah Decottignies in net once again, would pick up the win on the road.
With the win, Head Coach Gary Astalos picks up his 200th win behind the bench in his 220th game coach in the last six and a half seasons. Astalos, who became the entire hockey program's winningest coach last season, becomes the first Adrian Hockey coach to win 200 games behind the bench.
The Dawgs are back on the ice on January 12th when they take on the Western Michigan Stallions in the 2023 return of Thursday night hockey at Arrington Ice Arena.
