Seniors Shine as Men's Varsity Upsets Lake Forest on Senior Weekend
The #13 ranked Men's NCAA team took on NCHA opponent #6 ranked Lake Forest for their final regular season home series this weekend.
Vinny Post would put the Bulldogs up 1-0 at the 6:22 mark of the first period. Trevor Coykendall and Niko Coffman would assist. Brandon Marinelli would make things 2-0 Bulldogs before the end of the first, netting a goal of his own with 1:09 remaining in the first. Andrew Bellant and Sam Ruffin would assist.
The two teams would be scoreless through the middle frame with the Bulldogs holding the 2-0 lead heading into the final period.
Marinelli would snag his second of the night on the powerplay at the 5:09 mark of the third period. Ruffin and Dino Balsamo would assist. The Foresters would cut the Bulldog lead down to 3-1 at the 13:32 mark but Post would send home an empty net goal with 1:35 left in the contest to seal the victory for the Bulldogs. Coykendall would assist on Post's empty net goal.
Cam Gray would record the victory between the pipes for the Bulldogs.
The Foresters would strike first on Saturday afternoon on the powerplay and keep their 1-0 going into the first intermission. They would add to that lead, going up 2-0 with another powerplay goal forty-two seconds into the second period. Vinny Post would net his third of the weekend to cut the lead down to one. Zach Heintz and Joey Colatarci would assist. Dean Hewines' first of the season would tie the game at two a piece at the 6:55 mark of the second with Post picking up the lone assist. Dino Balsamo would net a powerplay goal with eighteen seconds remaining in the middle frame to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the game. Heintz and Matt McNair would assist.
The Foresters would tie things at three with 6:18 gone in the third period. Matt Eller's first of the season would once again give the Bulldogs the lead at the 9:19 mark of the third. Bryce Van Horn and Colatarci would assist. The Foresters would once again tie the game at the 13:57 mark of the third period and the two teams would go into overtime.
Heintz would be the hero with a little over a minute gone in overtime, netting a powerplay goal with assists from Ruffin and Colatarci.
Final score Saturday afternoon would be 5-4 in favor of the Bulldogs with Cam Gray once again picking up the win in net.
The Men's NCAA team is on the road against Concordia-Wisc next week and then Trine University the weekend afterward before they begin the NCHA playoffs.
