Barrett Breaks Win Record as #1 MD1 Sweeps Oakland


The #1 ranked MD1 team took on the #24 Oakland University Golden Grizzlies in the first game of a home at home series on Thursday night at Arrington Ice Arena.

Dominic Moore would score the Bulldogs’ first goal of 2020 at the 8:26 mark of the first period. Dante Raposo and Sam Spaedt would assist. Tyler Fyfe would send home the Bulldogs’ 31st powerplay goal of the season seven minutes later at the 15:25 mark of the first. Brenden Stanko and Chris Donaldson would assist. The Grizzlies would cut the Bulldogs’ lead in half at the 16:45 mark of the first period but a goal from Brenden Stanko would give the Bulldogs a two goal lead once again at the 17:39 mark. Dan Stone and Mike Finger would pick up assists. After one, the Bulldogs would lead 3-1.

The two teams would start the second period four on four and then the Bulldogs would receive a five minute major with 1:18 left in the two penalties. The Dawgs would kill off 1:18 of 4 on 3 penalty kill and the remaining 3:42 of 5 on 4 penalty kill to start the second frame. Manny Silverio would snag his sixteenth of the season at the 8:37 mark of the second with assists from Marcel Kottek and Rainer Glimpel. Stone would pick up his sixth of the season at the 16:50 mark with assists from Mark Fratarcaneli and Fyfe. The Grizzlies would score on the powerplay to cut the lead to 5-2.

The Grizzlies would cut the Bulldog lead to 5-3 in the third period, but Connor Smith would score his team leading 18th goal at the 2:32 mark of the third.

Final score Thursday night would be 6-3 in favor of the Bulldogs with Mike Barrett picking up the win in net. With the win, Barrett picked up his 66th career win to become the winningest goaltender in MD1 team history.

The two teams would square off once again on Friday night in Rochester for the second game of the series.

Dominic Moore would once again kick things off for the Road Dawgs, putting them up 1-0 midway through the first with a powerplay goal. The 1-0 score would hold through the end of the first.

Dan Stone would notch his career high seventh of the season and second of the weekend in the second period to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Rainer Glimpel would add the Bulldogs' second powerplay goal of the evening to put the Dawgs up 3-0. Connor Smith would add the third of five second period Bulldog goals with an assist from Jordan Oshowy. Tyler Fyfe would add his fifteenth goal of the year for a commanding 5-0 Bulldog lead. A goal from Chris Donaldson would be good for a 6-0 lead and the final goal of the second period to send the Bulldogs into the third up by six.

Marcel Kottek would light the lamp for the first goal of the third to put the Dawgs up 7-0. The Grizzlies would score twice afterwards, but Smith would add his second of the night with an assist from Fyfe for an 8-2 lead. The Grizzlies would add a third goal, but Moore's second of the game would once again give the Bulldogs a 6 goal lead, this time by a score of 9-3.

Mike Barrett would once again pick up the win between the pipes for the Dawgs to extend his record of winningest goaltender in team history.

The Dawgs are back in action on Saturday night at Arrington Ice Arena against the Eagles of Robert Morris University-Illinois.
