MD1 Routes Western Michigan 8-1 in Season Opener
The MD1 team took on the Western Michigan University Stallions on Thursday night at Arrington Ice Arena to open the regular season.
Dominic Moore wasted no time getting the Bulldogs off of the board, scoring his fiftieth career goal and the first goal of the season 27 seconds into the first period. Kyle Perkowski and Jordan Oshowy would assist. Mark Fratarcangeli would put the Bulldogs up 2-0 midway through the second scoring off of a backdoor rebound off of assists from Marcel Kottek and Tyler Fyfe. After one, the Bulldogs held a 2-0 lead while outshooting the Stallions 18-9.
Sam Spaedt would notch his first career goal in his first career game to kick off the scoring for the second period, picking a corner for the third goal of the game. Austin Kuhn and Rainer Glimpel would assist on Spaedt's first Bulldog goal. Spaedt's goal would be the lone goal of the second period and the Bulldogs would hold a 3-0 lead going into the third while outshooting their opponents 29-18.
Perkowski would light the lamp less than thirty seconds into the third period off of an unassisted goal. The Stallions would cut the Bulldog lead down to 4-1, scoring shorthanded. Connor Smith would answer back less than a minute later, scoring his first as a Bulldog to give the Bulldogs a 5-1 lead. Oshowy and Brenden Stanko would notch assists. After a few extracurricular activities after the play, the two teams would play 4 on 4 for two minutes before a three minute major powerplay for the Bulldogs. Fyfe would notch a powerplay goal as soon as the powerplay began, giving the home team a 6-1 lead in the second. Smith and Stanko would add assists to Fyfe's powerplay tally. Spaedt would add a second goal on the night on the penalty kill, going in all alone and sending home his second goal of the night. Oshowy would add an assist on Spaedt's goal. Smith would also add a second goal, this time on the powerplay, for the final Bulldog goal of the evening to make things 8-1.
Final score Thursday night in Adrian would be 8-1 in favor of the Bulldogs. Mike Barrett would pick up the win between the pipes, stopping 25 of 26 shots that came his way. The Bulldogs and Stallions face off again Saturday evening in Kalamazoo for the second game of the home at home GLCHL series.
