MD1 Sweeps Liberty on the Road
The MD1 team travelled to Lynchburg, Virginia this weekend to take on the #9 Liberty University Flames in a two game road series. The Bulldogs took the first two games of the season series this past October at home by scores of 8-2 and 6-3.
The Flames would strike first on Friday night, netting two in the first period to send the Bulldogs into the second period down by two goals.
Kyle Perkowski would catch a stretch pass on a breakaway and send one home to put the Dawgs within one at the 4:40 mark of the second period. Manny Silverio would be awarded the lone assist. Dominic Moore would score 14 seconds later to tie things up at a pair of goals a piece. Danta Raposo would notch the only helper on Moore's goal. Liberty would answer back with a go-ahead goal two minutes later to make things 2-3. Justin Fisher would knock home a loose puck off of a rebound to make things even at 3 a piece with 50 seconds left in the second period. Raposo and Mark Fratarcangeli would assist.
The two top-ten teams would head into the final frame tied at 3 a piece. The Flames would take the lead once again off of a goal at the 6:49 mark of the third period. Moore's second of the night at 9:44 mark would tie things up once again at 4-4. Marcus Rose would assist on the powerplay goal. Raposo would net another Bulldog powerplay goal at the 12:44 mark to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the night by a score of 5-4. Mason Vaugh would grab the only assist.
The 5-4 lead would be all it took to propel the Bulldogs to victory Friday night as Mike Barrett picked up the win in net, stopping 38 of 32 shots that came his way.
The Bulldogs would come out hot Saturday night, netting four goals in the first twenty minutes of play. Jordan Oshowy would grab goal #1 at the 7:30 mark of the first on the powerplay. Chris Donaldson and Dante Raposo would assist. Raposo would net a powerplay goal of his own at the 10:12 mark of the first. Donaldson and Oshowy would assist. Dan Stone would make it a hat trick's worth of goals for Bulldog defensemen at the 13:02 mark off of an even strength goal. Marcus Rose would be given the lone assist. Mark Fratarcangeli would score off of a shorthanded breakaway with 25 seconds remaining in the first period to sendthe Bulldogs to the second period with a 4-0 lead. Oshowy would be given the lone assist on the goal.
The next forty minutes of play would go by scoreless for either team, with goaltender Mike Barrett turning aside every shot he faced through not just even strength play, but multiple penalty kills, including two five on three kills. Final score in Lynchburg would be 4-0 in favor of the visiting Bulldogs.
The MD1 team closes out the regular season next weekend with a home-at-home series with Calvin College before heading into the GLCHL Playoffs at Arrington Ice Arena March 7-9. The final home game of the regular season will be next Thursday, February 28th at 7:15 pm as the Bulldogs honor the Class of 2019.
