Women's Varsity Opens Season with Split Against River Falls
The Women's Varsity team took on the Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons this past weekend in a two game away series to open their season.
The Bulldogs struck first on Friday night with freshman Kenzie D'Ascenzo netted her first of the season off of an assist from junior Jacqueline White. The Falcons would tie things up at the 18:20 mark of the first period and the two teams would finish the first deadlocked at 1 a piece.
Sophomore Brooke Schmebri would break the tie for the Bulldogs, scoring an unassisted goal at the 12:27 mark of the second period. The Falcons would tie things once again ten seconds later and the two teams would stay tied through the end of the second frame. The Falcons would gain their first lead of the night at the 14:54 mark of the third before senior captain Tory Harshman would tie things up once again at the 17:21 mark of the third. Harshman's tying goal would be assisted by freshman Julia Barrett and sophomore Sydney Daversa.
Neither team would find the back of the net for the remainder of the third and the two teams would take things to overtime. Freshman Jessica VonRuden would be the overtime hero. scoring the game winning goal with 1 second remaining in overtime. Harshman would pick up the lone assist on VonRuden's game winner. Final score Friday night would be 4-3 in favor of the Bulldogs with Kate Turner picking up the win in net and head coach Shawn Skelly picking up his first win as head coach of the Bulldogs.
Jessica VonRuden would score a pair of first period goals to go up 2-0 in the first period Saturday afternoon. Junior Maggie Mitter would assist on VonRuder's first while junior Brianna Buchanan would assist on the second. A three goal second period from the Falcons would send the Bulldogs into the third period down by a goal. The Falcons would go up 4-2 at the 3:36 mark of the third to put the Bulldogs down by two. Senior Kortney Diaz would snag a shorthanded goal at the 17:05 mark on an unassisted effort to have the Bulldogs pull within one, but it wouldn't be enough to force overtime as the Bulldogs would fall to the Falcons 4-3.
The Women's NCAA team opens their season at home this Saturday night at 7:00 pm when they face Northland College for the first of their two game series. They play Northland College once again on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
