MD2 Picks Up Big Victory Over Rival Trine, 5 Points in 3 Game Weekend
The Men's D2 team faced off against two different opponents this past weekend, once at home at Arrington Ice Arena Thursday night against Trine and back to back road games against Davenport Friday and Saturday nights.
The Bulldogs and Thunder squared off on Thursday night in the Bulldogs first home contest of the season. The Thunder would score right off the bat, 49 seconds into the first period to put the Bulldogs down 0-1 early on. Freshman Phil Pugliese would even things up for the Bulldogs a minute and a half later, scoring off of assists from Ondrej Tomek and Alexander Sode. The Thunder would pull ahead once again at the 13:29 mark with an unassisted goal to go up 1-2. Adrien Sebag would tie things up with 1:06 to play in the first with assists from Justin Session and Nick Stanko. After one, the Bulldogs and Thunder would be tied 2-2.
Captain Brandon McLean would score the first of a pair of Bulldog goals in the second period, netting the tie breaking goal at the 6:42 mark with the lone assist going to Nick Mooney. Tomek would grab a goal of his own less than five minutes later to give the Bulldogs the 4-2 lead. Stanko would be awarded the lone assist on Tomek's goal. After two, the Bulldogs held a 4-2 lead.
Pugliese would score his second of the night at the 14:45 mark of the third period to give the Bulldogs a more comfortable 5-2 lead with Sode once again grabbing the assist. Tomek would net his second of the night on an empty net with a minute and a half left to play in the third period. Jack Clary would pick up one final goal with 42 seconds remaining with assists from Session and Phil Grippi to make things 7-2 Bulldogs as the buzzer rang. Trevor Kalinowski would pick up the win in net for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs would travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan Friday night to take on the Davenport University Panthers. The two teams would skate through the first twenty minutes of play scoreless before Hayden Winch would break the tie at the 4:00 mark of the second period. Winch's goal would be assisted by Marc Peters and Brandon McLean. Phil Pugliese wouldmake things 2-0 Bulldogs 48 seconds later off of an unassisted effort. Davenport would add a pair of goals before the end of the second as well to once again send the two teams to the locker room deadlocked.
Brett Siewertson's first of the season would be the tie breaker and eventual game winner, coming unassisted at the 12:02 mark of the third period. Nick Mooney would add a second third period goal, also unassisted, at the 13:43 mark of the third to give the Bulldogs a more comfortable 4-2 lead.
Final score Friday night would be 4-2 Bulldogs with Trevor Kalinowski once again picking up the win between the pipes.
The Bulldogs and Panthers would square off in Grand Rapids once again on Saturday night in their final game of the weekend. Phil Pugliese would grab his fourth goal in three games to kick things off for the Bulldogs two minutes into the first period. Rob Bathory and Marc Peters would grab assists on Pugliese's goal. The Bulldogs would hold onto the 1-0 lead through the first twenty minutes of action until the Davenport Panthers evened things up at 1 a piece at the 19:05 mark of the second period. After two, the Bulldogs and Panthers would be deadlocked at 1. The Panthers would get their first lead of the night off of a goal at the 10:23 mark of the third but Ondrej Tomek would make it a tie game four minutes later. Nick Stanko and Stefan Boskovic would assist on Tomek's game tying goal.
The two teams would stay deadlocked through overtime and force a tie.
The MD2 Bulldogs are back at Arrington Ice Arena on Sunday, November 4th when they face off against the Aquinas College Saints.
