MD1 Sweeps Liberty in First Top 5 Matchup of the Season
The MD1 team took on the #5 ranked Liberty University Flames this weekend for a pair of home games.
Joe Costello would kick things off late in the first period in game one between the two high flying teams. Brenden Stanko and and JP Grineau would assist. The Bulldogs would hold the 1-0 lead going into the second period.
Chris Donaldson would put the Dawgs up 2-0 at the 10:52 mark of the second period with assists from Stanko and Grineau. The Flames would cut the Bulldog lead in half 2 minutes later and Costello would answer back at the 15:00 mark to regain the 2 goal lead. Marcel Kottek would be awarded the lone assist on Costello's goal. Mark Fratarcangeli would add a beautiful breakaway goal 40 seconds later to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead. Jordan Oshowy would be awarded the lone assist on Fratarcangeli's goal. Kottek would find the back of the net from the blue line for the first time this season at the 17:15 mark to give the Bulldogs a comfortable 5-1 lead with an assist from Grineau. Cooper McLean would add a shorthanded goal with 43 seconds left in the second off of an unassisted effort to send the two teams into the final twenty minutes of play with a 6-1 Bulldog lead.
Rainer Glimpel would grab the first of two third period Bulldog goals at the 10:41 mark of the third with the lone assist going to Dominic Moore. Kyle Perkowksi would add an unassisted goal to make things 8-1 at the 15:46 mark to close out the scoring for the Bulldogs. The Flames would sneak one more past Mike Barrett before the buzzer rang and the Bulldogs would come out victorious by a score of 8-2.
The Flames would strike first Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs 1-0 after twenty minutes of play. The Flames would lead the Bulldogs 2-0 with a goal at the 46 second mark of the second frame. Rainer Glimpel would cut the lead in half at the 2:29 mark of the second with a goal coming from Dante Raposo and Chris Donaldson. Raposo would tie the game three minutes later with a shot from the point, assisted by Marcus Rose. The Flames would go up once again the 10:38 mark, making it 2-3 in favor of the visiting team. Tyler Fyfe would tie things up 42 seconds later, knotting up the score at 3-3. Michael Tratar would be awarded the lone assist on Fyfe's goal. Jordan Oshowy would add the go ahead goal on a partial breakaway with 42 seconds left in the second period. After a circus of a second period, the Bulldogs held a 4-3 lead.
Justin Fisher would send home an unassisted goal two minutes into the final frame to give the Bulldogs room to breathe with a 5-3 lead. Brenden Stanko would close out the scoring for the Bulldogs with a goal in the final three minutes of the game. Stanko's goal would be assisted by Joe Costello and Marcel Kottek.
FInal score Saturday afternoon would be 6-3 Bulldogs with Mike Barrett once again picking up the win between the pipes.
The Bulldogs are back on home ice this Thursday night as they face the University of Utah at 7;15 pm.
