MD1 Sweeps Mercyhurst
In their second weekend of action, the MD1 Bulldogs took on the Lakers of Mercyhurst University in a two game home series at Arrington Ice Arena.
The first period went by scoreless on Saturday night and the tie wasn't broken until the 18:56 mark of the second when Brenden Stanko broke the tie at the 18:56 mark on the powerplay. Joe Costello and Marcus Rose would grab assists on Stanko's goal. After two, the Bulldogs led 1-0.
An explosive third period would see seven Bulldog goals scored, starting with Costello at the 5:15 mark of the third. Stanko and Rose would grab assists. Stanko would add his second of the night 29 seconds later with assists from Costello and Rose. The same line would add another from Costello at the 9:58 mark of the third from Rose. JP Grineau would add his first of the season a little less than a minute later to make things 5-0. Justin Fisher would add the lone assist. Costello would completete the hat trick at the 12:38 mark of the third with assists once again going to Rose and Stanko. Fisher would add his second of the season under two minutes later with an assist from Kyle Perkowski. Mike Finger would close out the scoring at the 17:00 mark of the third with assists going to Rainer Glimpel and Tristan Knott.
Final score Saturday night would be 8-0 Bulldogs with Mike Barrett picking up the win and his 6th career shutout.
The Bulldogs struck first again Sunday afternoon, this time at the 8:32 mark of the first period with a goal from Marcus Rose and an assist from Tyler Fyfe. Kyle Perkowski would add another for the Bulldogs ten minutes later to put the Dawgs up 2-0 going into the second period of play. Fyfe and Justin Fisher would be awarded assists on Perkowski's goal.
Cooper McLean would send home his second of the season with 3:27 gone on an unassisted goal to put the Bulldogs up 3-0 in the second. The Lakers would send one past Mike Barrett on a 5 on 3 penalty kill to make things 3-1 midway. through the second period. Dante Raposo's first as a Bulldog would make it 5-1 Bulldogs minutes later with assists from Brenden Stanko and JP Grineau. After two, the Bulldogs held a 4-1 lead.
A shot from the circle from Mark Fratarcangeli on a rush would trickle past the Mercyhurst goaltender for the fifth and final goal of the game in the third period. Final score Sunday afternoon would be 5-1 Bulldogs with Mike Barrett picking up the win once again between the pipes.
The Bulldogs will be back in action at Arrington Ice Arena on Friday, October 19th when they take on the University of Alabama at 7:00 pm.
