Shawn Skelly ('11) Named Head Coach of Women's NCAA Team
After the announcement of former Head Coach Chad Davis' departure from the Women's NCAA Program, the Bulldogs have named former Men's NCAA standout and mulit-record holder Shawn Skelly ('11) the fourth head coach in the team's history. Davis' departure from the program was announced Saturday when he was named Head Coach at Division I RIT.
Skelly spent four years on the Men's NCAA team, making history in the inaugural season when the Bulldogs won 26 games and went on a 20 game win streak that included an MCHA (now NCHA) Harris Cup victory, followed by three more Harris Cup victories over the next four years as well as the program's first berth in the NCAA Men's DIII National Tournament.
Skelly, a third of what was statiscally the best line in all of D3 hockey from 2007-09, holds mulitple career records within the Men's NCAA team's record books including the team's record for points in a career (229) and goals (102) as well as the MCHA/NCHA's scoring record.
After graduating in 2011 with a degree in business, Skelly went on to play professional hockey for five seasons, spending time in the East Coast Hockey League and the Southern Professional Hockey league, racking up 155 points in 160 SPHL games and 57 points in 103 ECHL games.
In 2016, Skelly returned to Adrian as the assistant coach of the Women's NCAA team, where he and Chad Davis led the team to their first Frozen Four appearance en route to a runner-up finish in the National Tournament for the first time in team history. He was then named assistant coach for his former team, the Men's NCAA team, and led the Bulldogs behind the bench with former linemate Adam Krug ('08).
Skelly and fellow Bulldog alumni and assistant coach, Hannah McGowan ('15), will kick off the season with the Women's NCAA Team on Saturday, October 27th on the road against Wisc. River Falls and open the season at home on Saturday, November 3rd against Northland at 3:00 pm.
