Women's Varsity Wins 3rd Straight Slaats Cup in Overtime Thriller
The Women's NCAA team took on the Lake Forest College Foresters Saturday night at Arrington Ice Arena. The Bulldogs looked to capture their third straight Slaats Cup NCHA Playoff title on home ice.
The Foresters struck first at the 4:52 mark of the first period to take the first lead of the night. Brianna Buchanan would answer with less than two minutes remaining in the first period to even things up at 1 a piece. Kristi Zink would be awarded the lone assist.
A powerplay goal from Olivia Fox would give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead 4:19 into the third and final frame. Tory Harshman and O'Sullivan would pick up assists. The Foresters would tie things at the 11:26 mark of the third to send things to overtime.
Kortney Diaz would be the hero for the Bulldogs, sending home a rebound on an odd man rush right after a penalty kill at 15:00 even into the overtime period to send the Bulldogs bench onto the ice and into a pile in the corner of the arena. Abbie Grias would be awarded the lone assist on Diaz's game winning goal.
Kate Turner would pick up her 21st win of the season and be awarded the All Tournament goaltender award. Forward Brianna Buchanan and defensemen Kristi Zink and Kelly O'Sullivan would all be named All Tournament as well.
The Bulldogs now await the D3 Selection Show on Monday morning to find out who their next opponent will be in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
