Men's Varsity Tops Finalandia, Falls to St. Norbert
The Men's Varsity team were on the road once again this weekend where the faced the Finlandia Lions on Friday night in Houghton and then faced off against the St. Norbert Green Knights on Saturday night in Green Bay.
The Bulldogs first took on the Finlandia Lions on Friday night in Houghton, Michigan.
The lone goal of the first period would belong to Kyle Brothers with assists going to Matt McNair and Vinny Post at the 12:03 mark of the first frame.
Mat Thompson would give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the 2:47 mark of the second period, the lone assist would go to Vincent Paquette. Ryan Cusin's first goal as a Bulldog would make things 3-0 10 minutes into the middle frame. Thompson and Paquette would tally assist's on Cusin's goal. Brian Bachnak would snag his first of the season at the 11:27 mark of the second period. Connor Armour and Cameron Cooper would grab assists. Thompson would grab his second of the night on the powerplay a minute later with assists going to Cusin and Cory Dunn. Finlandia would spoil Entmaa's shutout at the 15:44 mark of the second, but Thompson would add another powerplay goal with 1:52 to play in the second to complete the natural hat trick. Dunn and Braden Hellems would assist on Thompson's third of the night. After two, the Bulldogs had a 6-0 lead over the Lions.
Austin Rust would pick up a shorthanded goal to start things off in the third and final frame at the 1:24 mark. Thompson and Hellems would pick up the assists. Taylor McCloy snagged his first of the night five minutes later with assists from Brothers and McNair. Post would score his first of the season at the 15:57 mark of the third. Dunn and Nick Erb would be awarded assists on the goal. McCloy's second of the night would close out the scoring for the Bulldogs. Brothers and McNair would once again be awarded assists.
Final score Friday night would be 10-1 in favor of the away team and Kevin Entmaa would pick up his third win of the season.
The Bulldogs would then travel to Green Bay, Wisconsin to face their fierce rivals, the St. Norbert College Green Knights.
The Green Knights would strike first, scoring the only goal of the first period Saturday night. Dino Balsamo would break the ice for the Bulldogs and even things up at 1 at the 6:51 mark of the second period. Things looked to be all tied up at one to end the second before the Green Knights pulled ahead by one with 0:37 left to play in the second. After two, the Bulldogs were down by a score of 1-2.
Mat Thompson tied things up at two at the 4:54 mark of the final frame on an unassisted effort. St. Norbert would pull ahead once again with a powerplay goal to make the score 2-3 in favor of the Green Knights. Taylor McCloy would tally a powerplay goal of his own with 4:47 to play in the final period to tie things up and send the game to overtime. Braden Hellems and Matt McNair would assist on the game tying goal.
St. Norbert would grab the game winner on the powerplay with 0:59 remaining in the overtime period to hand their Bulldogs their first loss of the season.
The Bulldogs host their first home at home weekend series this weekend with the Trine University Thunder. They travel to Indiana Friday night and then play host to the Thunder on Saturday at 7:05 pm.
