Men's Varsity Punches Ticket to Frozen Four
The Men’s Varsity team traveled to Wisconsin Stevens Point for the 2017 NCAA Quarterfinal game on March 18th, 364 days after the Pointers ended the Bulldogs season at Arrington Ice Arena in the 2016 NCAA Quarterfinal Game.
Trevor Boyd would strike first on the powerplay, giving the Bulldogs the first lead of the game at the 6:44 mark of the first period. Connor Armour and Joey Colatarci would assist on Boyd’s goal. The Pointers would tie things up at 1 less than a minute later while at even strength. Captain Mat Thompson would once again give the Bulldogs the lead with 19 seconds remaining in the period. Taylor McCloy and Kyle Brothers would assist on Thompson’s powerplay goal. After one, the visiting Bulldogs would have the 2-1 lead.
Dino Balsamo would add a third powerplay goal at the 6:28 mark of the second period. Armour and Boyd would assist on Balsamo’s goal to give the Bulldogs a two goal lead. The Pointers would grab a powerplay goal of their own at the 14:58 mark to cut the Bulldogs’ lead down to one once again and tie the game with 20 seconds left in the period. The two teams headed into the final frame deadlocked 3-3.
Boyd’s second of the night would give the Bulldogs the lead once again at the 6:18 mark of the third period. Cory Dunn would add a fourth powerplay goal three and a half minutes later to once again give the visitors a two goal lead. Brothers and Armour would assist on Dunn’s goal. Austin Hervey would send home an empty net goal with 1:47 to play to punch the Bulldogs’ ticket to the Frozen Four.
The Bulldogs will travel to Utica, NY this weekend to make their third Frozen Four appearance in program history where they look to capture the program’s first national championship title.
