MD1 Claims GLCHL Rookie and Coach of the Year: 4 Bulldogs Named First Team All League
The Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey Conference announced their league awards this afternoon and the Bulldogs won big.
Goaltender Mike Barrett took home the Rookie of the Year award and was named first team all league. Barrett has turned heads this season, posting the best record in the entire ACHA and sitting at second in the league in GAA (1.54) and leading in SV% (.954). Barrett had an undefeated regular season, posting a 17-0 record in 17 games started for the Bulldogs, not dropping a game until league playoffs.
Head coach Gary Astalos was named Coach of the Year, which was a no brainer for the league. As a rookie bench boss, Astalos has lead the MD1 team to their best record in their 10 year program history and a GLCHL regular season title as the Bulldogs posted a 29-1 regular season record and a 31-2 record through playoffs so far.
Freshman JP Grineau was the lone defenseman named First Team All GLCHL. Grineau leads all Adrian defenseman with 33 points (2g-31a) through 33 games this season.
Fellow freshman Marcus Rose was named as one of two Bulldog forwards and the First Team All GLCHL. Rose is currently leading the team in goals, assists and points with 58 pts (33g-25a) in his rookie season.
Junior forward Brad Kobryn was the second Bulldog named First Team All GLCHL. This is Kobryn’s third time being named First Team All GLCHL as he earned the same accolade his freshman and sophomore seasons as well. Kobryn currently sits at second in points on the team with 52 (31g-21a).
Senior defenseman Nikolas Sakellaropoulos was also named to the All Defensive team for the second consecutive season. Sakellaropoulos has tallied 13 points from the blue line this season (1g-12a).
The Bulldogs travel to Columbus, OH later this week for the 2017 National Tournament where they will face the winner of Midland University vs. Syracuse.
