Strong Powerplay Leads MD1 Past Oakland
The Men’s ACHA D1 team hosted their final game of the first semester at Arrington Ice Arena this Thursday night when they played host to the Oakland Grizzlies.
The Bulldogs got on the board first with Chris Derochie’s fifth of the season. Brad Kobryn and CJ Nicholson would grab assists on Derochie’s first of the night. Sam Johnston would add to the Bulldogs’ lead seven minutes later for his first of the season. Michael Tratar would take the lone assist. After twenty minutes of action at AIA, the Bulldogs would lead 2-0.
Offense exploded in the twenty minutes that followed. Marcus Rose would grab his first of the night 1:32 into the middle frame with assists from Archie McKinnon and Rainer Glimpel. Nicholson would grab one of his own at the 4:01 mark of the second. The Grizzlies would take a five minute major for facemasking the Bulldogs’ Sam Johnston while the Bulldogs would take a coinciding two minutes minor for roughing, giving the Bulldogs a three minute powerplay at the 6:04 mark of the second period. Nick Goettel would grab a four on four goal at the 6:22 mark of the second with assists from Rose and Dominic Moore. Rose would snag two in a row at the 8:22 mark and 9:30 mark of the second to complete the hat trick. Chris Derochie and Marcel Kottek would assist on his second goal and JP Grineau and Brad Kobryn would snag assists on the third. The Bulldogs would grab two powerplay goals on their three minute powerplay. The Grizzlies would once again be penalized with a five minute major after a brutal cross check on Brad Kobryn. Justin Fisher would snag yet another powerplay tally for the Bulldogs at the 17:56 mark of the second for his seventh of the season. Glimpel would assist on Fisher’s powerplay tally. Derochie would snag his second of the game at the 18:28 mark. Kobryn and Kottek would be awarded assists. After two, the Bulldogs were thumping the Grizzlies 9-0.
Kobryn would snag his first goal of the game at the 2:22 mark of the third period. Kottek and Grineau would be awarded assists. Kobryn would snag another at the 10:56 mark of the third for his second of the game and twentieth of the season. Grineau and Kottek would assist once again. Derochie’s hat trick goal would be the final goal of the night, coming at the 16:22 mark of the final frame. Ted Anstett and Mark Fratarcangeli would assist on Derochie’s third. The final buzzer would sound and goaltender Matt Schnoes and the Bulldogs would shut out the Grizzlies 12-0.
The Bulldogs would travel to Rochester, Michigan to face the Grizzlies once more before closing out the first semester of play.
Fisher would grab his second in two games to give the Bulldogs an early lead at the 5:20 mark of the first period while on the powerplay. Grineau would grab the lone assist. An unassisted goal from Glimpel would give the visiting Bulldogs a 2-0 lead going into the second period of action.
The Grizzlies would cut the lead to one at the 5:42 mark of the second period, however, Rose’s fourth goal in two games would give the Bulldogs the two goal lead once more at the 13:03 mark of the middle frame. Grineau and Kottek would be awarded assists. Dominic Moore would grab his first of the series later on in the third period at the 6:31 mark. Josh Hosking would grab the lone assist. Glimpel’s second of the night would be the final goal of the night, coming 19 seconds later with assists going to Moore and Rose. The Bulldogs would take game two by a score of 5-1 and would take the series to finish the semester 18-1
The Bulldogs return to action on the road on January 13th when they travel to Indiana to take on the Indiana Tech Warriors. They return home to Arrington Ice Arena the next day, January 14th at 7:00pm to face the Warriors once again.
