The Girls Are On A Roll: WACHA Sweeps Miami En Route To First #1 Ranking
Move over boys, the girls are on a roll.
WACHA has had a remarkable start to the season, going 10-0, sweeping five straight opponents, including two top 10 ranked teams. They reached a season high ranking of #2 on November 7th after sweeping their fourth straight opponent. The true test of their talent came this past weekend when they travelled to Miami, Ohio to face the #1 ranked Redhawks.
The Bulldogs took the first game by a score of 1-0 with Taylor Murcek scoring the lone goal and Alison Dungey picking up the shutout as the Bulldogs shut out the Redhawks for the second time in two seasons, becoming the only team to hold the red-hot RedHawks scoreless in nearly three years.
The Redhawks put up more of a fight the next day, evening the score at 3-3 in the third period before Samantha Fortune would score the game winner with 12 minutes left in the game. Tara Wreblis, Murcek and Britt Levasseur would also grab goals for the Bulldogs in their second win.
With the sweep, the Bulldogs took over the #1 spot in this week’s ACHA Women’s Division 1 ranking for the first time in their five year program history.
“When we started this team my freshman year, it was very exciting to see how we would do and where we would end up,” says Assistant Coach Ellyn Stanton, who was a part of the inaugural team in 2012-13, “It's amazing to see the program building and being more successful. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to have stayed around and help after graduating and to see us ranked at #1 for the first time in program history is awesome! Coach Berger has really done so well with recruiting and building this team and keeping the girls going and pushing themselves to be better everyday.”
WACHA is back on the ice this weekend at Arrington Ice Arena where they face #5 Liberty University Flames. Puck drop is slated for 3:00 pm on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
