D3 Gold Goes 2-1 During Three Game Weekend


The Men’s D3 Gold team played in three games this past weekend, beginning with a home-at-home series with the reigning National Champions, the Oakland University Grizzlies.

The Bulldogs travelled to Detroit Skate Club to face the Grizzlies on home ice on Thursday night for the first game in a three game weekend. The Bulldogs struck first when Mario Tomei fired a shot from the point on the powerplay. Phil Grippi would snag the lone assist on Tomei’s goal. The Grizzlies would tie the game with 8 seconds left in the first, sending the two teams to the dressing rooms with a deadlock.

Joe Gibbs would break that tie with 9:42 gone in the second period. Joe Laskero would grab the lone assist on Gibbs’ goal. Jack Clary would capitalize on the second Bulldog powerplay of the period twenty seconds into the powerplay, sending home his team leading fourth goal of the season at the 16:17 mark of the second. Mitch Bancroft and Laskero would grab assist on Clary’s powerplay goal. Clary would grab a second goal two and a half minutes later at the 18:44 mark of the second, sending the puck top shelf to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead. Trevor Benaglio would take the lone assist on Clary’s second tally. The second period would end with a 4-1 lead for the Bulldogs.

Oakland would score two goals in the third to pull within one, however, defense prevailed in the final minute of the game when the Grizzlies pulled their goaltender for an extra man, Paul Gorski would block a shot from the point and deflect it into the neutral zone with 5 seconds to go to win the game for the visiting team. Final score was Bulldogs 4 Grizzlies 3.

Oakland got on the board first on Friday night, tallying a short handed goal 8:17 into the game. The Grizzlies would add another at the 14:39 mark and the Bulldogs would go to the locker room down by a pair while shots were an even 13-13.

Joe Laskero got the Bulldogs on the board 2:39 into the second, tipping a Phil Grippi shot to go top shelf. Grippi would get the lone assist on Laskero’s goal. Oakland would grab another goal at the 18:30 mark and the two teams would head into the third with the score 1-3 in favor of Oakland.

The Grizzlies would score four goals in the first ten minutes of the third, including a powerplay and 5 on 3 powerplay goal. Zack MacKay would grab his first of the weekend at the 10:29 mark of the third while shorthanded. MacKay’s goal would make the score 2-7 in favor of Oakland. Oakland would score once more before the end of the game and end up with a major for head contact with 3:56 remaining in the game. Alex Egan would capitalize on the five minute powerplay with 31 seconds remaining to make the final score 3-7 in favor of the Grizzlies.

For the final game of the weekend, the Gold team travelled to Midland, Michigan to face off against Northwood University. The Bulldogs would come out strong, scoring 5 goals in the first period to take a commanding 5-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. Mario Tomei and Jack Clary would each grab a pair of goals and Andy Petersmark would grab one during the first.

The Bulldogs scored four more goals in the second period. Trevor Benaglio, Zack MacKay, Brandon Benaglio and Brandon McClean all netted one a piece before the Timberwolves broke the shut-out. The Bulldogs would grab two more from Chase Whallon and MacKay and the Timberwolves would sneak one more past Will Emch for a final score of 11-2 Adrian.

The Gold squad returns to Arrington next Saturday night at 7:00 pm where they will face off against the Timberwolves once again.

1* Jack Clary: Clary netted 4 goals and tallied three assists this weekend which included two goals against the national championship MVP goaltender, one of which would be the game winning goal.

2**Mario Tomei: Tomei, a defenseman, sent home 3 goals and grabbed 3 assists this weekend, proving that his shot from the point is an absolutely pivotal part of the Bulldog powerplay unit.

3***Joe Laskero: Laskero not only score, but make plays happen as well and has a pretty filthy set of mitts on him. Laskero grabbed a goal and 2 assists this weekend, all against Oakland University.
