Men's ACHA D1 Sweeps University of Michigan-Dearborn
The #8 Men’s ACHA D1 team took on the #13 University of Michigan Dearborn Wolverines this past weekend in a home-at-home series.
The Bulldogs struck first on Thursday night at Arrington Ice Arena. Junior forward Brad Kobryn notched his 96th career goal on the powerplay at the 14:55 marks of the first. Senior Chris Derochie grabbed the lone assist on Kobryn’s powerplay goal. After one, the Bulldogs would lead the Wolverines 1-0 despite being outshot 5-15.
The Wolverines would tie the game in the second period with 15:59 gone in the middle frame and the second period would end in a 1-1 deadlock. Shots on goal after two wer 13-22 in favor of the visiting team.
Freshman Rainier Glimpel would break the tie with 1:38 gone in the final frame. Freshman Marcel Kottek and senior Sam Johnston would grab the assists on Glimpel’s tie breaking goal. Kottek would notch a goal of his own three minutes later on an unassisted effort. Freshman Marcus Rose would tally the final goal of the night with 16:43 gone in the final frame. Kottek and Glimpel would grab assists on Rose’s goal. The final horn would sound and the Bulldogs would best the Wolverines 4-1 in the first game of the two game series despite being outshot 22-32.
The Bulldogs travelled to Dearborn the next night to take on the Wolverines one last time for the regular season. The Bulldogs wasted no time getting on the board, striking first once again when sophomore Marc Peters grabbed his first college goal at the 0:56 mark of the first period. Peters’ goal was unassisted. The Wolverines would tie the game with five seconds remaining in the first and the two teams would once again be tied after one period of play in Dearborn.
The Bulldogs would strike in the first minute of the second period as well as Marcel Kottek picked up his second goal in as many games at the 0:51 mark of the second. Brad Kobryn would have the lone assist on Kottek’s goal. The Bulldogs would capitalize on their fourth powerplay opportunity of the night at the 7:30 mark after the Wolverines were whistled for cross-checking. Senior Josh Hosking sent home his second goal of the season, giving the Bulldogs a two goal lead. Nick Goettel and CJ Nicholson would assist on Hosking’s powerplay tally. The Wolverines would pull within one goal one minute later, however, two goals from Marcus Rose before the end of the period would give the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead going into the second intermission.
The Wolverines would score their only powerplay goal of the contest 1:29 into the final frame while on the powerplay. Kottek would grab his second of the night three minutes later, giving the Bulldogs the three goal lead once again. The Wolverines would come within two once more at the 12:56 mark of the third. The Bulldogs would go on a 5 minute powerplay after the Wolverines were whistled for a five minute major for kneeing sophomore Cooper McClean with 17:41 gone in the third. The Bulldogs would tally one goal on the major powerplay, scored by senior Chris Derochie. Marcus Rose and Brad Kobryn would grab assists on the final goal of the night. After sixty minutes of play, the Bulldogs came out on top of a 7-4 score to head back to Adrian with the sweep and 4 big points.
The Men’s ACHA D1 team travels to Kent State University this Friday and will face off against the Golden Flashes at Arrington Ice Arena on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
