The ACHA D3 Gold team took on the University of Michigan Wolverines in a home-at-home series this past weekend to open the 2016-17 season.

The Bulldogs chased out the Wolverines’ starting goaltender in the first ten minutes of the match in Ann Arbor. Sophomore Brandon McClean, junior Pat Campbell, freshman Joe Laskero and junior Trevor Benaglio all lit the lamp for the Bulldogs in the first frame. Nick Bordeaux grabbed the lone Bulldog tally in the middle frame and the Wolverines would grab two 4 on 3 powerplay goals before the period was over. The Wolverines would pull within one with 7:34 remaining in the game, however, the Bulldogs defense would make sure the score stayed in favor of the visiting team. Junior Jack Clary would send home an insurance goal with 53 seconds left in the game off of a diving shot after being tripped by a Wolverines defenseman. The Bulldogs would take game one by a score of 6-4.

The home team would strike first in game two at Arrington Ice Arena. Senior Nick Bordeaux would light the lamp on the penalty kill to give the Bulldogs the first lead of the game. Brandon McClean and freshman Phil Grippi would grab assists on the shorthanded tally. The Bulldogs would go to the locker room with a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Joe Gibbs would give the Bulldogs a 2 goal lead in the second period while on the powerplay. Senior Ryan Betz and Joe Laskero would get the assists on Gibbs’ powerplay goal. The Wolverine’s would notch their lone tally of the game in the middle frame, however, the Bulldogs would come back and answer with a goal from junior Andy Petersmark. Laskero and Bordeaux would grab the helpers on Petersmark’s goal. After forty minutes of play, the Bulldogs were up 3-1.

Trevor Benaglio would give the Bulldogs a commanding 4-1 lead 6:46 into the final frame of play. Laskero and Jack Clary would get the assists on the fourth Bulldog goal. The Bulldogs would go on the powerplay after the Wolverines were whistled for too many men on the ice. Senior Mario Tomei would send home his first of the season on the powerplay with freshmen Michael Butlet and Chase Whallon be awarded assists. After 60 minutes, the Bulldogs came out with a 5-1 victory over the Wolverines.

Saturday night’s game marks the third season-opener victory against Michigan for the D3 Gold team and in each contest the Bulldogs scored 6 goals against the Wolverines and junior Jack Clary tallied a goal in each game.

The Bulldogs return to action on Friday night when they travel to Flint to take on the Unversity of Michigan-Flint. They return to Arrington on Saturday, October 15th at 3:00 pm to face Michigan-Flint once again.

3 Stars of the Weekend:

1*Joe Laskero: Freshman Joe Laskero is tied for first on the team in points with 1 goal and 3 assists in two games so far this season. The freshman is fitting in just fine with the Bulldogs top line with his junior linemates Benaglio and Clary.

2*Jack Clary: Junior Jack Clary is tied for first on the team with 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points in two games, picking up right where he left off last season as well as centering the first line for the Bulldogs once again.

3***Nick Bordeaux: Senior Nick Bordeaux grabbed two goals in the first two games of the season along with an assist this past weekend. One of those tallies was a shorthanded goal, right up Bordeaux’s ally as he was second on the team for short handed goals last season.
