Men's ACHA DI Falls to Northeast Generals

The Men’s ACHA DI team took on the Northeast Generals of the North American Hockey League on Monday, September 19th at Arrington Ice Arena, marking the first game of the 2016-17 hockey season at Arrington, the tenth season of Adrian College Hockey.

Both teams came out strong, however, the Bulldogs seemed to control the start of the game at first. Play was uninterrupted for the first 2:12 of the game until freshman defenseman Marcel Kottek was called for interference. The Bulldogs would kill off the first penalty of the afternoon, and every other penalty they were assessed, going 3-for-3 on the penalty kill in their first contest of the season. The Generals would strike first, scoring at even strength with 4:51 gone in the first frame. After a single period, the Bulldogs would trail the Generals 0-1 and would be outshot 8-11.

The Bulldogs were given their third powerplay of the afternoon only thirty seconds into the second period, however, would not capitalize on that powerplay, or their second powerplay of the second period. The Generals would score once again at the 5:43 mark of the second, leaving the Bulldogs down by two to go into the locker room after 40 minutes of play. After two, however, the Bulldogs were outshooting the Generals 19-17.

Not surprisingly at all, junior forward Brad Kobryn broke the ice and scored the first Bulldog goal of the season at the 0:58 mark of the third and final period after picking off a pass from a Generals defenseman and evading the defense to put the puck five hole from the top of the circles. Kobryn’s goal would be unassisted. The Generals regained a two goal lead at the 8:20 mark of the third, with Matt Schnoes allowing his first goal of the game after coming in at the 10:12 mark of the second period. The Bulldogs would finally capitalize on a powerplay at the 15:01 mark of the third after the Generals were called for high sticking in front of their own net. Freshman Rainer Glimpel would send home his first in a Bulldog sweater at the 15:01 mark of the final period of play.

Despite valiant efforts in the final minute and a half of the game, the Bulldogs would fall to the Generals by a score of 2-3. The Bulldogs, however, would outshoot the Generals 38-24 and go 1 for 6 on the powerplay and 3 for 3 on the penalty kill.

The Bulldogs open their regular season on the road on September 30th when they travel to Midland University. They open their regular season at home on October 7th at 7:00 pm when they face Stonybrook at Arrington Ice Arena.
