Kobryn's Hat Trick Not Enough as Men's D1 Falls to Davenport in OT

The Men’s ACHA D1 team took on the Davenport University Panthers for their final home game of the 2015-16 season on February 11th, 2016. Prior to the game, the Bulldogs honored four players who were playing their final game at Arrington Ice Arena. Seniors (Captain) Bobby Bodette and (Assistant Captain) Andre Rakas will be graduating in the spring and sophomores Zack MacKay and Nick Balavich will be transferring from Adrian next semester.

Bodette and Rakas played all four years of their career at Adrian and both were selected to represent their country at the World University Games in 2013 and Bodette was selected once again in 2015.

The Panthers struck first at the 12:43 mark of the first period, giving the visiting team the 1-0 lead going into the first intermission. Brad Kobryn, however, tied the game with only a minute gone in the second period on a beautiful breakaway goal. Erik Alden and Austyn Roudebush would snag assists on Kobryn’s first tally of the night. Kobryn would strike once again four minutes later on yet another beautiful breakaway goal, slipping past the defenders and lifting the puck past the goaltender’s shoulder for his second goal of the game. Kobryn’s second of the night would be an unassisted effort. The Bulldogs would only hold the lead for ten seconds before Davenport would take advantage of a misplayed puck to even the score at two. The Panthers would grab the lead once again at the 10:53 mark of the second period and the second period would end with the visiting team up by one once again.

The Bulldogs would send shot after shot at Davenport goaltender Clayton Brown in the third period in a valiant attempt to tie the game up. Brad Kobryn would once again be the hero, flipping the puck over the goaltender’s leg pad to complete his hat trick and tie the game with 1:34 left in the game.

The game would go to overtime, where the Panthers would score on their first shot of the overtime period at the 2:06 mark.

The Bulldogs would rack up 37 shots on goal during the game and Austyn Roudebush would stop 22 of the 26 shots he faced in the contest. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season on Saturday night in a 3-2 overtime victory at the University of Michigan Dearborn to give them a 23-7 overall record on the season. The Bulldogs will head to Kent, Ohio for the Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League playoffs next weekend where they look to capture their second consecutive playoff title and earn a bid into the ACHA D1 National Championships.
