Sophomore Brad Kobryn Leads D1 Bulldogs Past Midland Warriors
The Men’s D1 team took on the Midland University Warriors on Saturday night for the second of a two game series at Arrington Ice Arena. The Bulldogs had defeated the Warriors 4-3 in overtime, coming back from a 2-1 deficit in the second period, on Friday afternoon. Brad Kobryn tallied the first and last goals of the game, scoring the game winner only 29 seconds into the overtime period. Josh Hosking and Nick Goettel also grabbed goals for the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs got on the board first this game. While on the penalty kill, captain Bobby Bodette carried the puck along the boards into the Warriors zone and made a pass to Matt Schwehr. Schwehr would fake a shot then make a beautiful pass back to Bodette who knocked in his third of the season. Schweher would grab the lone assist on Bodette’s shorthanded goal. The first period would end with the score 1-0 and the shots 15-4, both in favor of the home team.
Brad Kobryn wasted no time in the second period, sending home his ACHA leading 28th goal of the season 39 seconds into the middle frame. Kobryn would shoot the puck on the ice between the goalie’s foot and the post after receiving a pass from Ted Anstett. Anstett would have the only assist on Kobryn’s first of the night. The Warriors would grab their own shorthanded goal three minutes later, making the score 2-1. Bodette would grab his second of the night with 8:31 gone in the second, Anstett would once again grab the lone assist. After two, the score was now 3-1 and shots on goal were 28-13, both still in favor of the Bulldogs.
Kobryn would be assessed a charging penalty with 9:04 gone in the final period of play after being hooked and running into the Warriors goaltender and somehow ending up in the net. As Kobryn charged out of the penalty box, the puck escaped the Bulldogs’ defensive zone and into the neutral zone, where Kobryn snagged it and dangled his way past the Warriors defense, taking a beautiful bardown shot that would give the Bulldogs the 4-1 lead and giving him 2 goals on the night. Anstett would once again grab the assist on Kobryn’s goal, which was scored at the 11:11 mark of the third. Anstett would grab his eighth of the season four minutes later on the powerplay, sneaking the puck under the goaltender after an Andre Rakas shot deflected off the goaltender’s leg-pad. Rakas and Kobryn would notch assists on Anstett’s goal, the final goal of the game.
Goaltender Matt Schnoes would turn away 16 of the 17 Midland shots he faced, earning his sixth win of the season. The Bulldogs sent a total of 45 shots toward the Warriors’ goaltender, scoring on 5 of those shots. The Bulldogs will be back in action after the semester break on January 9th when they travel to Illinois to take on Illinois University for a two game series. The D1 team will be back at Arrington Ice Arena on Saturday, January 16th, when they face off against University of Michigan-Dearborn at 7:30pm.
