Men's D1 Falls Short of a Comeback Against Panthers
The Men’s D1 team hosted their annual Tuesday before Thanksgiving game on Tuesday, November 24th, against rival the Davenport University Panthers.
The Bulldogs struck first in the first period of action when Tyler Duarte scored the first goal of the game, his ninth of the season. Duarte’s goal would be an unassisted goal. Matt Schwehr gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead less than a minute later, tallying his fourth of the season. Archie MacKinnon and Andre Rakas would grab assists on Schwehr’s goal. The period would end with the Bulldogs on top 2-0.
The Panthers would make it a one goal game 11:35 into the second frame on the powerplay after Erik Alden was sent to the box for kneeing. Davenport would tie the game two minutes later, once again on the powerplay, after Nick Balavich was called for cross checking. The two teams would be tied at two apiece after two periods of play.
The Panthers would grab their first lead of the night while the Bulldogs were shorthanded once again, this time with Brad Kobryn in the box for high sticking. The Panthers would score once more, this time at even strength, forty-four seconds later, leaving the Bulldogs down by two goals. The Bulldogs would pull within one, however, with 1:23 remaining in the game when Brad Kobryn snuck the puck past the goaltender to tally his team and ACHA leading 25th goal in 16 games.
The Bulldogs would continue to pelt the Davenport goaltender with shots and put an extra attacker on the ice, but their efforts in the final minute would not be enough. The Bulldogs are now 13-2-0-0-1 (W-L-OTW-SOW-OTL) on the season and will be back at Arrington Ice Arena on December 4th when they face off against Midland University at 1:30pm.
