DIII Black Splits Series with Davenport University
The DIII Black squad took on the Davenport University Panthers on Friday, October 30th at Arrington Ice Arena.
The Bulldogs struck first at the 7:42 mark of the first on their second shot of the game. The goal was scored by Jake Wakelin, asissted by James Smith. The Bulldogs would strike once more less than six minutes later when Brandon McClean buried his first career goal, Sean Smalley and Anthony Longo would grab the assists on McClean’s goal. Davenport would pull within one before the end of the period, however, and the Bulldogs would end the period with a 2-1 lead.
The Panthers struck first in the second period with only one minute gone into the middle frame. The tying goal would be the only goal of the period and the game would be tied at 2 after 2 periods of play. The Panthers would score once more in ten minutes into the third period. The Bulldogs would pull the goalie with around a minute and a half left to play but the Panthers would send it down the ice to put the Bulldogs down 4-2.
Freshman goaltender Gilbert Oldrieve stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced,not including the empty net goal. The Bulldogs racked up a whopping 43 shots on goal over the course of 60 minutes of play.
After dropping the first game of the series, the Bulldogs travelled to Grand Rapids to take on the Panthers on their home ice. The Bulldogs would pull out an overtime victory and best the Panthers by a score of 2-1.
The Black team will be back at Arrington Ice Arena on Thursday, November 12th at 7:00pm when they face off against the University of Toledo.
