Late Game Heroics Send DIII Gold to a Tie with Calvin College
The ACHA DIII Gold squad faced off against their rivals the Knights of Calvin College at Arrington Ice Arena on October 24th. The Bulldogs came into the game seeking vengeance for their previous loss to the Knights in the ACHA DIII Regional Playoffs last season which knocked them out of contention for the 2015 ACHA DIII National Championships.
The Knights struck first 4:09 into the game. They would strike once again in the first period of play and the Bulldogs would find themselves down by two going into the locker room for the first intermission.
The Bulldogs would get on the scoreboard in the second period 5:52 into the middle frame when Myles Maltz found the back of the net for the first time that night. John Urmetz and Dan Hudson grabbed the assists on Maltz’s first goal of the game. Calvin would score once more with only 4 seconds remaining and the Bulldogs were now down 3-1 going into the final period of play.
The Bulldogs would pull within one right off the bat in the third period when Myles Maltz buried his second of the night only 53 seconds into the third. Adrian would tie the game with 9:35 gone in the third after a powerplay goal from Alex Egan for his team leading seventh goal of the season. Maltz and Hudson would get the assists on Egan’s goal. The Knights would take their final lead of the night with less than two minutes remaining. After a brief interruption after a malfunction with the clock/scoreboard that resulted in the announcer having to anounce the time remaining in the game with 45 seconds left, the Bulldogs had pulled the goaltender and had a faceoff in their offensive zone. For the next 45 seconds, the Bulldogs would pelt the Knights goaltender with shots and with only five seconds remaining, Kyle Schulz would lift the puck over the goaltender’s leg pad to tie the contest once again.
Despite numerous quality chances, mainly by Maltz and linemate Jack Clary, the Bulldogs would not find the back of the net during overtime and the hard fought game would end in a tie.
The Bulldogs will look to take the W tonight, October 24th, when they travel to the west side of the state to take on the Knights once again. The Bulldogs will be on home ice next Sunday, November 1st when they take on the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals at Arrington Ice Arena at 3:00pm.
***Carly’s 3 Stars of the Game***
1*Myles Maltz: Maltz lead the Bulldogs with two goals and two assists and had a hand in every Bulldog goal of the contest. His efforts in the dying seconds of the game and in overtime were fantastic as well..
2** Colin Gilead: Gilead did not get on the scoresheet at this contest, however, he had many quality chances and got plenty of pucks to the net during the game, especially during the last ten minutes of the game when the Bulldogs needed to get ahead.
3***Jack Clary: Clary also did not get on the scoresheet this game but created many quality scoring chances throughout the game, especially in overtime. Not only was he taking shots when the Bulldogs needed shots, but he followed the shots to the net and made his presence known in front of the goalie and wasn’t afraid to poke at the puck when the goalie was attempting to get it covered.
