W. ACHA Hands #1 Ranked Miami First Loss of the Season
The #3 ranked Women’s ACHA squad hosted the #1 ranked Miami University (Ohio) Redhawks for a two game series on October 17th and 18th. The Redhawks topped the Bulldogs on Saturday night 2-0, but the Bulldogs came back swinging on Sunday afternoon.
The Redhawks outshot the Bulldogs 13-4 in the first and 8-7 in the second, but neither team found the back of the net through the first two periods. Senior Jessie Rushing broke the tie at the 3:18 mark of the third period with a shot that went awry off of the Redhawk defenseman’s skate and past the goaltender, giving the Bulldogs a one goal lead. Sam Fortune and Valerie Twigg would grab the assists on Rushing’s powerplay goal. The Bulldogs would kill off two more penalties before the game was over and hold onto the lead. The Redhawks pulled the goaltender with less than 1:30 remaining in the game but the Bulldogs held them off until the buzzer sounded.
The Bulldogs handed Miami their first loss of the season and Rushing’s goal was only the second goal scored on the Redhawks in all five game’s they’ve played. Goaltender Allison Dungey was astounding in net for the Bulldogs, shutting down Miami’s red hot offense and turning away all 32 shots she faced for the shutout. The Women’s ACHA team will be back in action at Arrington Ice Arena on Saturday, October 24th at 7:30pm.
