D3 Gold Shuts Out Northwood 10-0
The ACHA D3 Gold team took on the Timberwolves of Northwood University in their second game of the 2015-16 campaign on October 1st at Arrington Ice Arena. The Bulldogs looked to get a 2-0 start on their season and did just that as they shut out the Timberwolves by a score of 10-0.
The first of ten goals came on a 5 on 3 powerplay. Northwood was assessed a tripping, then hooking call on the same play, giving the Bulldogs a two man advantage. Alex Egan put home his first of the season on the 5 on 3 with assists going to Myles Maltz and Gerin Hohl. Egan would bury his second of the night 42 seconds later, this time on the 5 on 4 powerplay. Tyler Grimshaw would give the Bulldogs a three goal lead with two and a half minutes remaining in the period and Paul Gorski would cap off the period with a goal with two minutes left to play. The Bulldogs would head back to the locker room with a comfortable four goal lead.
Jake Waldrup would score the first goal of the second period at the 15:47 mark of the second. Jack Clary and Nick Bordeaux would pick up assists on Waldrup’s goal. Dan Hudson would knock home the sixth Bulldog goal with less than five minutes remaining in the frame and Maltz and Hohl picked up the assists on the even strength goal. The Bulldog powerplay would be successful once again with 1:56 left in the second when John Urmetz scored the third powerplay goal of the night and his first college goal. Mario Tomei and Gorski would be awarded the assists on Urmetz’s goal. At the end of two, the Bulldogs had an impressive 7 goal lead. The Bulldogs however, would find themselves on a 5 on 3 for the last fifteen seconds of the second and the first minute of the third when Scott Millen joined Nick Bordeaux in the box after receiving a five minute major for slashing after backing up teammate Myles Maltz when Maltz was hit from behind. Maltz would also receive a ten minute misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Bulldogs would strike three times more in the third period and kill of not only a one minute 5 on 3 penalty, but a five minute major as well. The powerplay unit would strike for the fourth time with less than ten minutes remaining in the final frame. Mario Tomei sent home the eighth Bulldog goal of the contest and Urmetz and Bordeaux would grab the assists. Kyle Schulz would net his first college goal with seven minutes remaining on an unassisted goal and Egan would cap off a hat trick with 2:35 left in the game with a goal assisted by Colin Gilead and Nick Spagnol.
The Bulldogs skated away with a 10-0 victory over the Timberwolves and would average 1.25 shots per minute after amassing 75 total shots on goal in the 60 minute contest. The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 after the win and Justin Lindgren would pick up his first shutout of the year after blocking all 12 shots thrown his way. The Bulldogs return to Arrington Ice Arena on October 11th when they face the Chippewas of Central Michigan University.
