DIII Black Falls to Central Michigan
The ACHA DIII Black squad played their first home game at Arrington Ice Arena of the 2015-16 season on September 24th, facing a familiar foe, the Central Michigan University Chippewas.
As soon as the puck dropped, fans knew they were in for a hard hitting, physical game. Only 27 seconds in, the Chippewas were awarded the first penalty of the game. The Bulldogs, however, could not seem to find the back of the net on the powerplay. The score would remain deadlocked at zero until 11:16 into the period when the Chippewas buried the first goal of the game on freshman goaltender Gilbert Oldreive. The Chippewas would outscore the Bulldogs 2-0 after the first twenty minutes of play. The Bulldogs scored their lone goal of the game in the second period with 1:05 left in the middle frame. Sophomore Devon Herzig found the back of the net for the Bulldogs. Senior A.J. Burns and freshman James Smith grabbed the assists on Herzig’s goal. The action intensified at the end of the second period when an altercation between the Chippewa goaltender and a few Bulldogs happened by the benches as the teams were clearing off the ice. The Chippewas were given a two minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and the Bulldogs started the third period on the powerplay.
Despite outshooting their opponents 38-31, the Bulldogs fell to the Chippewas by a score of 3-1. The Black squad is back at Arrington Ice Arena on October 10th when they face the Grand Valley State University Lakers at 7pm.
