Explosive Third Period Sends DIII Gold Past University of Michigan

The ACHA DIII Gold team kicked off their season at home on September 18th when they faced off against the University of Michigan Wolverines to kick off homecoming weekend.

The Bulldogs struck early and struck first when senior Dan Hudson scored the first goal of the season 2:14 into the game. Senior Myles Maltz picked up the lone assist on Hudson’s goal. The Bulldogs would not strike again until the 14:56 mark of the second period when sophomore Tyler Grimshaw gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Senior Colin Gilead and sophomore Alex Egan notched assists on Grimshaw’s goal. The Wolverines, however, would tie the game before the period ended, scoring twice on junior goaltender Justin Lindgren.

The third period saw a flurry of goals by the Bulldogs and proved to be just enough to put them over the Wolverines by the time the final horn sounded. Grimshaw picked up his second goal of the night less than four minutes into the final period of play. Less than a minute later, sophomore Jack Clary gave the Bulldogs another two goal lead. Sophomore Scott Millen picked up the lone assist on Clary’s goal. The Bulldogs struck once again, this time on the powerplay, at the 7:36 mark of the third, Maltz picked up his first goal of the season in a four on four situation with the lone assist going to freshman Kyle Schultz. The final Bulldog goal of the night would go to Maltz on the powerplay with only fifteen seconds left in the game. Freshman Eric Blevins and Hudson picked up assists on the final Bulldog goal of the game.

The Bulldogs, lead by rookie Coach Max Gavin, would pull off their first victory of the season by a score of 6-2, which, coincidentally, was the same exact score as last year’s home opener against the Wolverines. The Gold Squad will be back in action on October 1st when they take on Northwood University at Arrington Ice Arena.
