Adrian ACHA D1 Squad Captures Third Consecutive GLCHL Title
The Adrian College ACHA Division 1 squad had one of their best seasons to date this past year. Posting a 31-5 record overall and a perfect 15-0 record at home, the ACHA D1 Men’s squad won their third consecutive GLCHL title but fell to Lindenwood University 2-1 in ACHA D1 Men’s Nationals in March.
The D1 squad was under new leadership behind the bench this season after Dan Phelps’ departure from the program last April. Former Bulldog Rob Hodnicki took over for Coach Phelps over the summer to lead the Bulldogs to their best record so far.
The team began their season on a hot streak, winning fourteen games in a row and riding a 15 game point streak before losing in regulation to Oakland University on the road for their first regulation loss of the season.
Perhaps the biggest story of the season, other than a perfect home record, was freshman Brad Kobryn. Kobryn tore up the ACHA his rookie season, leading the entire league in points and goals in his first season. Kobryn amassed 55 goals and 22 assists in only 35 games for the Bulldogs, averaging 2.2 PPG. Terrorizing goalies across the league, Kobryn had thirteen multi-goal games, including six hat tricks, one double hat trick, and two four goal games. In a tilt against Kent State on January 22nd, Kobryn tallied all four Bulldog goals on route to a Bulldog victory. This impressive feat was topped on February 7th in an away game as Western Michigan when Kobryn scored 6 of 8 Bulldog goals, becoming the only player in Adrian College Hockey history to post a fifty goal season. Kobryn was named GLCHL Most Valuable Player, GLCHL playoff MVP, GLCHL Rookie of the Year, and is currently in the running for ACHA D1 rookie of the year.
Second in points this season was sophomore Chris Derochie who posted 15 goals and 32 assists for a 47 point season. Freshman Justin Fisher came in third, tallying 5 goals and 29 assists for 34 points. Junior Bobby Bodette was only one point behind Fisher for fourth, racking up 18 goals and 15 assists for 35 points. Rounding out the top five was senior Alex Dobrzeniecki who posted another 33 point season, tallying 11 goals and 22 assists.
The Bulldogs run at the National Title was cut short in a game versus Lindenwood University in the first round of single elimination play, dropping the game 2-1 against Lindenwood.
The Bulldogs look to make it four in a row next season and capture their first National Title in school history and Brad Kobryn is on track to surpass former Division 1 captain Spencer Bonomo for the most points by an Adrian College Hockey player in their career.
