WD2 Sweeps Inaugural Weekend

The Women's ACHA D2 team played their first two games in program history this past Saturday night and Sunday afternoon against the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.

The Panthers would strike first on Saturday night, going into the locker room with a 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs in their inaugural game before freshman Maria Granger would break the ice and score the first goal in program history. Freshman Cece Werner would get the assist on the first goal in program history. The Panthers would pull ahead by one once again 5 minutes later but freshman Katie Hayward would tie the game once again with less than two minutes remaining in the second period on an unassisted effort.

Freshman Hannah Chase would be the Bulldogs first hero in program history at the 1:29 mark of the third and final period to give the Bulldogs their first victory in program history by a score of 3-2. Freshman Victoria Poland would grab the first win in program history for the WD2 squad as they put up 47 shots on goal in their first game.

Sunday afternoon, the Bulldogs and Panthers would face off once again at Arrington Ice Arena.

This time, sophomore Madi Drezek would get the start in net for the Bulldogs as they looked to grab their first sweep in their first series as a program.

The Bulldogs drew first blood this time with Granger scoring her second in as many games at the 18:09 mark of the first period with an assist going to freshman Erika Gilbert. Gilbert would grab one of her own in the second period off of an assist from freshman Summer Patterson.

The Bulldogs would come out hot in the third, scoring three goals in the final frame. Freshman Liz Anderson's first collegiate goal would give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead in the third period. Hannah Chase would grab her second in as many games at the 6:46 mark of the third period assisted by freshmen Cristina Rotundo and Maria Granger. Chase would grab another goal to close out the scoring for the game two minutes later with the lone assist going to Carly Costello.

The Bulldogs would pick up the shutout and go 2-0 over their first weekend of competition. The WD2 squad will be back in action on October 14th against Loyola at 7pm.
